Bunker Hill Community Colleges Hosts Family of Henrietta Lacks

Shirley Lacks and David “Sonny” Lacks, active representatives of their family’s story, captivated BHCC students, faculty, staff and visitors on April 27, 2017, with the story of their matriarch’s contribution to modern medicine–made without her knowledge or consent, as author Rebecca Skloot portrays in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The Lacks family spoke as part of the One Book program, which brings the entire College community together to read the same book over the course of an academic year.

Global Graduates

On Friday, May 12, 2017, 12 students from eight countries celebrated the culmination of a year of hard work at Bunker Hill Community College. They came to Boston from countries as far-flung as Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Colombia, Turkey, Egypt, South Africa and Ghana. The students were part of a U.S. Department program called the Community College Initiative Program (CCIP) aimed at promoting partnerships and resource sharing among global communities.

Dual Enrollment Students on the Fast -Track to Success

More than 700 students from more than 50 local high schools participated in dual enrollment courses this year. Hundreds of these students and their families celebrated their accomplishment on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, with cheers and applause. The event took place in the College’s Health & Wellness Center gym, and was followed by a summer barbeque-style reception with a photo-booth and graffiti wall, and a video featuring many of the program participants.

The full house of graduates, family and friends gathered to celebrate 1613 degree and certificate recipients, including those who completed their programs from summer 2016 through spring 2017, and those on track to complete their programs during summer 2017.

Close to 300 Students Sought Employment Through CareerConnect’s Technology & Retail Nights

On April 20 2017, Bunker Hill Community College hosted its third Technology Night. This installment of a series of spring career fairs is an evening specifically targeting opportunities in the tech industry. This event drew 146 BHCC students and alumni as well as 12 employers and tech recruiters. This was an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to socialize and connect with their peers, industry professionals and employers to learn the newest employment trends as well as discover career pathways and opportunities.

The contest challenges applicants to use StatCrunch, a powerful web-based statistical software, to “collect, crunch and communicate” a compelling story through data.

On May 30, 2017, Governor Baker and City of Boston Mayor Walsh announced The Boston Bridge program, a tuition-free college affordability program for 2017 high school graduates in the City of Boston. The Boston Bridge program allows City of Boston high school graduates to enroll at Bunker Hill Community College, Massachusetts Bay Community College or Roxbury Community College.
