Since 2013, the Office of Community Engagement and Professor Andy Reyes’ EDU 140 course have worked together to create meaningful learning experiences in Boston area middle schools. To date, BHCC is Citizen School’s largest partner in the Citizen Apprentice Program, with 15 students serving as Citizen Teachers each semester.
Citizen Teachers are volunteers who teach middle-school students in low-income communities’ new skills and expose them to new futures. For ten weeks this fall, volunteers work with a group of 15-20 students for 90 minutes on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity for BHCC students to serve their community and participate in a unique leadership and teaching capacity. Citizen Teachers receive up-front training, weekly lesson-plan assistance, and are paired with a trained staff member for on-going in-class support! Citizen Schools runs programs at school sites across Boston and Chelsea. BHCC students can easily get to Edwards Middle School, which is down the street in Charlestown, and the Wright and Browne Middle Schools by taking the Chelsea Shuttle bus. There are locations in Dorchester, Roxbury, and Roslindale as well.
For more information, please fill out an interest form at www.citizenschools.org/volunteer/sign-up/ and a Citizen Schools staff member will be in touch with you shortly!
